Welcome to Room 15!

Kia ora Room 15 whanau! Welcome to Term 1, 2018 - and for many of you, your first year at Target Road School (TRS).

My name is Robyn Teubes (Miss Teubes or Miss T - whichever you prefer) and I am excited to be able to start off your child’s learning journey at TRS. 2018 is going to be a wonderful and amazing experience for all of us, filled with awesome learning, fun, play and good times!

Room 15 is a play-based learning environment whereby children learn through play, developmental learning experiences, exploration, discovery, and inquiry. As a learning community, we will all learn together by sharing ideas and thoughts, talking about what we are learning and why, and supporting each other to understand and grow in our learning experiences. 

In term 1, we are focusing on Identity as our Inquiry Topic. In this inquiry, we will be learning about ourselves and our families, about belonging, and about our place in the world – family, school, community and NZ.

Since it is summer (well, it’s supposed to be!), we have swimming this term. Our swimming time is after lunch in Block 4 (so, around 2pm). We have been practicing our swimming pre-and-post routines such as how we get changed, where, what we do and how. During swimming time, we have been getting water confident and learning to float on our backs. There are more skills to learn and we are all very excited!

Room 15 Library time is Tuesday morning during Block 2 – just before Morning Tea. We are learning how to respect books and the library space. We are also learning to be responsible in the library by taking care of the books we read / take out, and making sure that we put things back where they belong. Library time is a great way to enjoy time to read in a peaceful space.

From Week 4, the children will have the opportunity to engage in Home Learning. I’ve mentioned a few things about Home Learning on our Room 15 Blog, but here’s a summary. Home Learning is a fun way for children to reinforce what they have learned at school. It includes their Ring Words which they can practice saying and writing each day, their reader, and some number fun. The idea of Home Learning is that it’s meant to be fun, not a chore, and it’s a way for you to see what they are learning in school and how they are growing in their learning.

At TRS, we have three very important values that we aim to practice every day. Our values are Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Over the year, we will be exploring these values in a variety of learning experiences so that we can incorporate these values in daily life both inside and outside of school. We celebrate the children demonstrating these values by presenting them with certificates at Assembly on Fridays. There are up to two certificates presented each assembly, so all the children can have an opportunity to be rewarded for demonstrating our school values. 

We have weekly newsletters, foyer displays of student learning, and classroom Blogs where you can find out what’s happening at TRS and how the children are going on their learning journey! So, please have a look-see. Feedback is always welcome 👍
